Ranked amongst the best basketball players in Kenyan history, Coop Bank’s inspirational player Peter Kiganya has retired from basketball and will now concentrate on basketball development especially with youth development programmes.

Kiganya who has been a key pillar of the Kenya Basketball Premier League champions Coop Bank  played in his final match in top flight basketball last year during the play offs against rivals KCB Lions where he guided his team to a back to back championship title. He however believes his departure will not have much impact in the performance of his team that is full of talent.

“I have been in this field for over 22years now and I think it is better to give other youth a chance to expose their talent. As much as I could have wished to continue playing, it comes a time when one has to put an end to something he loves. I have been part of my team for many years and am sure they will definitely miss me on the court but at the same time I believe they can challenge themselves to perform even better.”

“I decided to hang it up but I will not give basketball a cold shoulder as I will keep being part of the development projects and Friday night basketball with Code Red.” He added.

Kiganya, 40, has also been part of the Kenyan national basketball team for years now and his retirement will surely be missed both at club and national team. He will immediately shift focus to grassroots development through coaching and motivating young basketballers as well as concentrate on his personal development and private business outside the court.

Kiganya is also part of the coordinators of the Friday night basketball in partnership with Code Red.
